As the internationally recognized leader in the diagnosis and care of individuals with plasminogen deficiency, Dr. Amy Shapiro has the expertise, international reputation, proven leadership and motivation to serve on the board of the Plasminogen Deficiency Foundation and to chair the Scientific Advisory Board for the Foundation. She has worked within the field for 20 years, has served as the PI on the two international clinical trials for current investigational agents for the treatment of patients with PLGD, helped design both protocols, and enrolled and cared for the vast majority of all patients for both studies as the only center in North America. She has a broad background in coagulation and a proven track record in clinical research, and has developed a web-based resource for rare coagulation disorders (www.rarecoagulationdisorders.org). She has developed a strong national and international network of collaborators that will serve to further the mission of the Foundation, has served on clinical research steering committees, data safety monitoring boards, proposal review committees including for the NIH Clinical Trials Network, and as a chair for our affiliated institutional IRB. As such she has a deep knowledge of the design and conduct of clinical trials, the need to assure complete detailed datasets for analysis with appropriate monitoring for quality control, and regular communication to participating sites to assure study completion. Dr. Shapiro has the largest personal experience in patients with PLGD in the US and is keenly aware of the extent of disease manifestations and unanswered questions that require evaluation. She has developed longstanding relationships with patients/families affected with PLGD who are eager to assist and participate in the foundation’s efforts.
